It is a type of palatal expander supported by mini-implants designed by Dr. Won Moon at the University of UCLA.

The MSE device consists of two molar bands attached to the first maxillary molars and a central body containing an expansion screw with four welded tubes connected.

The expander adjusts to the vault of the palate and the patient is instructed to complete two turns each day to the expansion screw.
